Houses
In September 2006 Crome House, named after the famous landscape artist, John Crome (or Old Crome- often preceded by the word ‘Good’), began its new incarnation. With new House Captain’s, Matthew Corbett and Sarah Elmes, a new tie and scarf (added in 2007 with the arrival of the new Headmaster) and a desire for success. 2009/2010 is set to be another great year for Crome and I hope that you will all join me in attempting to bring the House trophy back to its rightful home!
When I first took on the role of Head of House, it was explained to me that the House system closely resembled that of Hogwarts, with Crome being modestly compared to Gryffindor (the ties and colours alone being a visual reminder). However as my time of Head of House rolls on, the comparisions have become more evident. The characteristics of a member (teacher or student it should be stressed!) of Crome House being:
1. A willingness to participate
2. A desire for the success of the House, not just themselves
3. Being gracious in victory, or defeat
4. Taking risks, being prepared to do things differently
5. Most importantly, team spirit
It seems like a story book but Crome House students really do behave this way (in most cases!)
The House Captains are chosen because they are paradigms of ‘Crome’ Spirit. They are respected by the staff and students alike and are always willing to set a positive example. They are chosen in discussion with all House staff and their attitude is exemplary.
2006-2007 House Captains- Matthew Corbett, Sarah Elmes; Deputies- Calvin Martin and Jessica Betts
2007-2008 House Captains- Jessica Betts and Hugo Rayne; Deputies- None Chosen (although Ellie Beattie and Pierre Pienaar were as good as…)
2008-2009 House Captains – Harry Lightfoot and Daniel Hill ; Deputies – Matthew Keely and Carla Morphett 2009-2010 House Captains - William De Feyter and Carla Morphett Deputies - Ailie Walker and Charlie Henley
To finish, an oft quoted line in House Assemblies, a clarion call to all the House:
‘This is the world that year by year,
While in her place the school is set,
Every one of her sons must hear,
And none that hears it dare forget.
This they all with joyful mind
Bear through life like a torch in flame,
And falling fling to the host behind -
'Play up ! play up ! and play the game !'
