NORFOLK SCHOOLS RUGBY

The 2009/2010 Norfolk Schools Rugby Competition has seen twenty schools competing for County Cup glory across four different age groups since September. The first of the four finals’ nights was held at Norwich Rugby Club on 4th February as Norwich School played Beeston Hall, who were taking place in their first County Cup Competition, for the Under 13 George Howard Memorial Shield. A good crowd saw an exciting game of flowing rugby that saw Norwich take an early lead. Beeston battled their way back into the game and finished strongly, but Norwich School proved too strong in the end winning the game 31 – 22. Mrs Howard came to watch the game and presented the medals and trophy to the teams.

On Thursday 11th February, again at Norwich Rugby Club, the Under 16 County Plate and Cup finals were played under lights. This Competition has been renamed the Gerry Frost Memorial in honour of the teacher in charge of rugby at Langley School who passed away in 2009.

The Plate final saw Downham Market High School beat Langley School 26 – 17. Downham looked the stronger team throughout the game and were clearly boosted by a vocal crowd, but Langley never gave up and regularly tested the strong Downham defence. Downham Market’s teacher in charge of rugby Barry Collins was delighted with the team’s performance having re-introduced rugby to the school a few years ago.

The Cup final saw Wymondham College beat King Edward VII School 17 – 10 in a bruising encounter in freezing conditions. Wymondham scored early on but the aggressive Kings Lynn side never gave up and pressurised their opponents throughout the game and were cheered on by their 70 supporters. Wymondham held on to retain the trophy that they had shared with Langley School in 2009.

Thanks must go to Norwich Rugby Club for hosting the finals and to Norfolk Rugby Union Referee’s Society for providing the officials for the games. The last two finals’ nights are on 3rd and 4th March to decide the Under 14 and Under 15 winners.
