At our Preparatory School in Norwich, Year 1 children follow the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and have daily numeracy and literacy lessons. Their topics range from transport to the weather, to life and work in Victorian times. We encourage our children to become independent, committed and enthusiastic learners and extend their learning by incorporating pupils’ interests and experiences. We celebrate each child’s learning through displays, assemblies and photos.

Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom. The children swim once a week in our indoor swimming pool and take part in the ASA swimming award nationally accredited programme. In addition, they have an hourly session in our Sports hall with a qualified sports coach, participating in activities such as circuit training, unihoc, short tennis, cricket and general ball skills.

Year 1 children have regular sessions for specific Forest School activities, although of course we do utilise our extensive grounds where appropriate in general lesson work. They also have the opportunity to learn some basic stitchwork making a gift for their parents at Christmas time and for Mothering Sunday, as well as taking part in investigative woodwork and a gardening programme in the Spring and Summer terms.

All our Pre-Prep children attend morning assemblies that provide opportunities for spiritual, moral and PSHEE learning. In addition, we invite guest speakers to talk to the children and have recently had visits from a nurse to talk about going into hospital, representatives from the fire brigade and police, a helicopter pilot and a parent to talk about the whole school ‘Jeans for Genes day’.

Computing is an integral part of the curriculum and all children benefit from interactive whiteboards in the classrooms.

Drama is an important part of the Pre-Prep curriculum at Langley Preparatory School at Taverham Hall and all children are encouraged to become confident performers; they take part in Christmas plays, class assemblies, a Spring dance display and a Summer music concert. All Year 1 children receive specialist tuition in music, dance, PE, French and Computing.

In the summer all Pre-Prep children participate in Sports Day and a Swimming Gala.

Year 1 children visit our school library each week and are encouraged to develop both a love of books and an understanding of how to care for them.

During the Spring Term we hold a themed week for all children in the Pre-Prep, such as a themed Activity Week. Each day is devoted to a different activity such as physical development, science, forest school, literacy and investigation with a special visit from for example a circus (this may vary each year) culminating in the production of a show for parents by the pupils in the afternoon.

Other events include ‘charity’ dressing up days, a Christmas Carol Service, theatre visits and a very popular school fete.

Through our After School club we offer an additional range of activities to children in the Pre-Prep. Pupils can try out swimming, dance,  book club, football, cheerleading, board games, lego, kuk sol won, tennis and golf to name but a few.
