Year 7 and 8 pupils enjoyed their visit to the University Technical College Norfolk for the Anglian Water Tower Challenge as part of the Norwich Science Festival.

The pupils worked with scientists and engineers from Anglian Water to look at two scenarios.

In the first scenario the group simulated the growth of the industrial age and the impact that this had on the environment. They carried out a series of exercises that allowed them to explore the impact that further development may have on the ecosystem and how this can be improved by considering more sustainable solutions.

In the second task they worked in small teams to plan and build a water tower, taking into consideration location, planning and environmental considerations before finally constructing the tower itself.

Pupils commented:
“We worked well as a team, we just didn’t build the tower very well.”

“There’s lots of maths and art in this.”

“Little things can make big changes to the environment.”
