We believe an education should stretch, inspire and develop every child. For us, it’s all about opportunity and choice through small classes. Every child is different, so finding the learning techniques that are right for them is essential. This provides children with the tools they need to guide them through their academic life.
Literacy and numeracy form the basis of teaching and targets are set to childrens’ individual abilities. At Langley Preparatory School at Taverham Hall, children develop academically and socially at their own pace. Achievements are always celebrated (stickers being a favourite reward!) with the focus on personal progress. Our aim is to help your child find the confidence they need, to become the best they can be.
We use creative, hands-on methods to introduce formal learning. All classes are structured around the National Curriculum and close individual monitoring allows us to set appropriate challenges at each key stage. This encourages concentration and the ability to think quickly and broadly; to communicate well and to work effectively in team activities.

In the Reception classes each child is allocated a key person. Children thrive from a base of loving and secure relationships. This is normally provided by a child’s parents but it can also be provided by a key person. A key person is a named member of staff with responsibilities for a small group of children who helps those children in the group feel safe and cared for. The role is an important one and an approach set out in the EYFS which is working successfully in settings and in Reception classes.
This role involves the key person in responding sensitively to children’s feelings and behaviours and meeting emotional needs by giving reassurance, such as when they are new to a setting or class, and supporting the child’s well-being. The key person supports physical needs too, helping with issues like nappy changing, toileting and dressing. That person is a familiar figure who is accessible and available as a point of contact for parents and one who builds relationships with the child and parents or carers.
Records of development and care are created and shared by the key person, parents and the child.
The enthusiasm and energy from our teachers, transfers easily to our children – a child who is inspired is a child who will learn.
All Pre-Prep children enjoy two music lessons a week and many have individual lessons as well. In year two children begin to learn conversational French. At the end of the year, children host a special breakfast – entirely in French – for parents and children! Other specialists, including authors, make regular visits. Educational trips and activity weeks are also great opportunities to try out new skills.
Drama, dance and art give great opportunity for creativity and self-expression. School plays and concerts are a much anticipated opportunity for children to show parents their world of imagination.
The Pre-Prep enjoys the school’s beautiful woodland setting. The modern classrooms are purpose-built and all have state-of-the-art interactive whiteboards. Our Forest School programme also provides all children with an exciting outside learning environment.
The Pre-Prep and Prep share the extraordinary Sports Hall, indoor swimming pool and our extensive playing fields. We encourage our children to have healthy bodies as well as healthy minds!
