The Year 8s were invited to Briar Chemicals in Norwich to get an opportunity to look at a chemical production facility and to talk to some recent graduates about their chosen career paths.

We were shown around by five very helpful employees, mainly Chemists and Chemical Engineers, who took time out of their day to tell us about the production facilities. They mainly make agro-chemicals for the industrial market place but it was interesting to see how chemicals that we use in the School laboratory are put through their paces in industry.

We visited their combined heat and power (CHP) plant, looked around their research laboratories and got up close to the production control room. The children asked some very searching questions and a number came away from the visit with a much clearer idea of the demands of a STEM specialist in industry:

“It was really useful to see all the buildings and equipment and how everything works.”

“I was surprised how advanced all the facilities were.”
