Our Governors

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Nicholas MBE MA

Chair of the Board of Governors
Mark Nicholas was born in Norfolk and attended Taverham Hall Preparatory School and Langley School. He went on to read History at the University of East Anglia and completed a master’s degree at King’s College London. He is also a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Mark’s professional life has included an eighteen-year career in the British Army. He has seen operational service in Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Iraq. He also completed senior staff appointments at the Ministry of Defence and Army Headquarters specialising in strategy development and operational management. Retiring from the Army in 2015, after commanding Cambridge University Officers’ Training Corps, Mark is now the Show and Programmes Director for the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association. In addition, he is the Director of the Norfolk Skills and Careers Festival, the largest event of its kind in East Anglia. Mark is a trustee of the Norwich War Memorials Trust and is the Royal Anglian Regiment County Colonel for Norfolk. He is married to Penny and they have two boys.

Mrs Sharon Turner

Sharon was Chair of Governors of Taverham Hall Educational Trust from 2009 until 2017. Sharon joined Central Trust in 1998. Between 1998 and 2004 she jointly ran the Group with its founder Andrew Turner.
Since 2004 Sharon has been a Non-Executive Director of Norfolk Capital (the holding company) with a focus on Finance. She has also served as a Non-Executive Director of Norwich City Football Club. Prior to Central Trust her personal work experience
has been in the Banking sector where she was Finance Director of a Canadian Bank and subsequently in Investment Banking where she was Investment Director. Sharon is a Chartered Management Accountant and sits on the Finance & General Purposes Committee.

Dr Hannah Nearney, MBChB, MSc, MRCPsych, PGDip(CAT)

Originally from Norfolk, Hannah studied Medicine at the University of Leicester and began her postgraduate training in in the Midlands before returning to work in East Anglia in 2005. She works as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist and is a partner in a local private practice (Anchor Psychiatry Group). Hannah sits on the Education and People Committees, is the governor with responsibility for safeguarding and takes a particular interest in wellbeing and pastoral care.

Mr Mat Newnham

Mat Newnham is a Partner, specialising in employment law, at Birketts LLP. Mat has been a Governor for a number of years and is also a parent of two children currently in the Prep School. Mat sits on the Finance & General Purposes Committee and also chairs the People Committee.

Mr Stephen Brown BSc(Hons) MRICS

Stephen is Managing Partner of REAL Consulting, a local business based in Norwich delivering Project Management and Cost Management services. He was a parent at Langley Senior School from 2007 until 2017 where both his children attended. He is a keen cyclist, open water swimmer and active member of CAMRA. He has been a governor since 2008 and now chairs the Estates and Health and Safety Committee with responsibility for the management of both estates.

Mr John Miller

John is a business and management consultant in the financial services sector, having spent the previous 30 plus years with several major insurance companies throughout the UK. His experience spans marketing, business development, mergers and acquisitions, strategy development and senior leadership. Away from business and a hectic family life, John is a keen runner and gadget fan! John has been a school governor since 2013. John chairs the Marketing and Outreach Committee.

Mr Zak Virgin

Zak was born and schooled in Norfolk before reading law at The University of Nottingham. He is a Partner at Mills & Reeve specialising in banking and finance with twenty years’ experience in corporate transactions and funding matters. He joined the firm from law school and now enjoys responsibilities recruiting its new trainees and looking after their pastoral care. Prior to Langley, Zak was a governor at City College Norwich for twelve years. He sits on the Finance & General Purposes Committee.

Mrs Caroline Pain

Caroline hails from Scotland but has resided in Norfolk since 1996. A graduate in History, Caroline’s career has centred around marketing and business growth. She has extensive experience, gained primarily in the financial services sector, where she has led a range of commercial and change initiatives. Particular areas of interest include brand and communications strategy, global proposition development, customer experience strategy and the design and deployment of digital capabilities in international markets. Caroline is currently Senior Vice President for Aetna International, recently acquired by CVS Health, the latter of which ranks at number 7 on the Fortune 50. Caroline is the parent of a daughter at Langley Senior School. Caroline sits on the Marketing & Outreach Committee.

Our Co-opted Governors

Mr Julian Barnwell

Julian Barnwell attended Langley Prep and Senior School, and with his brother owns the oldest family run printing company in the UK which is based in Aylsham. The family has supported the MS Society for number of years, and Julian was chair of the Norwich and District Branch for over 10 years. Past fund raising campaigns for MS have included both brothers water skiing across the English Channel, circumnavigating mainland UK in a rigid inflatable boat in a week, and Julian rowed across the Atlantic for MS, and set three world records! Continuing on the nautical theme Julian is Chair of Eastern Rivers Water Ski club and was instrumental in keeping skiing on the Broads by working closely with the senior management at the Broads Authority. This was achieved by incorporating new management policies for water skiing into law via the Broads Act 2009. Julian sits on the Estates Committee which has responsibility for the management of both estates.

Mrs Rachel Buxton

Rachel Buxton is a Partner in Hoveton Hall Estate, a small country estate based near the Norfolk Broads. Running the estate with her husband they have diversified into hospitality, events, accommodation, tourism and farming. Rachel’s background is primarily in marketing and events. She has worked across a variety of private, charitable and local government sectors since graduating from university with a degree in Education. Rachel has two sons currently at Langley Senior School and two daughters at a local primary school. She has previously been Chair of Governors at her local primary school as well as Chair of her local parish council. In her spare time Rachel is a keen theatre and cinema goer. With four dogs in the household she also enjoys long country walks with the whole family. Rachel sits on the Marketing and Outreach Committee.
