Langley Hockey

Here at Langley, we’re passionate about hockey and dedicated to providing our pupils with top quality sporting excellence. Our Hockey programme gives all pupils the opportunity to understand, develop and excel in this exciting team sport.

Girls’ hockey runs in the autumn term between September and December, in which the girls play both indoor and outdoor hockey. We currently run 2 senior teams from Year 11 upwards, an U15A and B team, an U14 team and 4 U13 7 a-side teams. Our girls hockey teams compete in the national cup competitions at all age groups, giving all girls the opportunity to compete at the highest level they can, against the toughest oppositions in the East region and beyond. We also take part in the national indoor competition at U16 and U18.

Girls across all age groups will have 2.5hrs of timetabled hockey coaching each week during games, as well as the choice of 2 activity sessions per week. We have an incredible coaching team, who bring  a wealth of playing and coaching experience, including; junior club coaching, England Hockey Single System groups, men’s and women’s national league playing and coaching and junior international age group squad coaching. More importantly, all of the coaches are teaching staff, and are in the best position to build strong relationships with the girls throughout many aspects of school life and truly understand the path of development that each girl is on. Many of the staff continue to play and/or coach outside of school at both recreational and performance level. This enables the hockey programme to remain up -to-date with current trends in the game and link- in with England Hockey’s ‘Golden Thread’ approach to coaching the game. To supplement the coaching team, we also have support in the form of a strength and conditioning coach, performance analysis and access to the school physio, to ensure that players who want to, get the very best from their sessions.

Our fixture card is varied and covers many of the Norfolk and Suffolk independent schools, as well as local fixtures against hockey playing state schools. Fixtures are played during the week, freeing up weekends for pupils to engage in hockey through their local clubs. These include Norwich City HC and Norwich Dragons, as well as our educational hockey partner, Harleston Magpies. We consistently have a number of girls at school representing Harleston Magpies in the latter stages of National Cup competitions, both indoor and out, with a handful of our senior players involved in the ladies 1XI, playing national league hockey. Our link with Harleston Magpies also enables us make use of their facilities, including playing and training on their water based pitch, giving pupils the very best hockey experience.

Our #TAPIN culture, created by our pupils embodies the hockey programme here at school. The Team comes first, we aim to create Adaptable players in a Positive environment, staff and pupils are asked to Inspire the next generation and we adopt a No Excuses approach. Hockey is enjoyed by staff and pupils alike at Langley School and our ultimate aim is for our school community to love hockey, regardless of age or ability. Once the love of the game is developed we then hope to foster independent, creative and resilient hockey players, who are able to take responsibility for their own development, reflect on their performance in training and in matches and confidently communicate with staff and their peers. All pupils have a responsibility for inspiring the next generation of players coming through and everyone has the potential of becoming a future 1XI player.
