Life in Prep

Our broad and dynamic curriculum encourages children to ask questions, think independently and explore the world from different perspectives.

As an independent Prep School, we have the freedom to extend learning beyond the conventional curriculum and create experiences that respond to pupils’ interests, strengths and ambitions.

Children study a broad range of multidisciplinary subjects including English, Maths, Science, Humanities, Languages, Creative and Performing Arts, Food Technology, Design and Technology, Engineering Computing and Robotics, Sport, Outdoor Education and Personal Development.

This is enriched through age-appropriate opportunities such as Philosophy and Ethics, academic competitions, subject masterclasses, lecture series and our wider Enrichment Programme.

Pupils can take part in challenges such as the Junior Maths Challenge, while specialist teaching gives them opportunities to explore subjects in greater depth and discover where their interests might lead.

Each pupil is also provided with a Microsoft device and an iPad, supporting independent learning, collaboration and the development of digital fluency.

Small classes allow teachers to know each pupil as an individual. Children receive personalised support where they need it and appropriate challenge where they are ready for it, helping them make progress with confidence.

At Langley, exploration is not simply about trying more things. It is about helping every child discover what captures their imagination, what gives them the motivation to keep learning and reach their excellence.

Our setting allows for experiences rarely found at other prep schools. Pupils can fish in our private stretch of river, explore our woodland through our Outdoor Learning programme, and participate in drama productions, musical soirees, and house singing competitions.

Older pupils mentor younger ones, helping to build a family-like atmosphere where confidence, empathy, and leadership are nurtured from the earliest years.

Our extensive woodland, parkland and dedicated Outdoor Learning Centre give pupils the freedom to investigate, experiment and learn through practical experience.

Activities can range from pond dipping, den building and campfires to scientific investigations, studying local flora and fauna, and helping to manage the natural environment.

These experiences deepen pupils’ understanding of the world while developing resilience, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Children learn how to assess challenges, persevere when something does not work immediately and take increasing responsibility for themselves and others.

Time spent outdoors also helps pupils develop confidence, independence and a lasting appreciation of the natural world.

Sport is a central part of life at Langley Prep School, with pupils taking part in football, netball, cricket, rugby, hockey, athletics and swimming. Supported by specialist coaching and excellent facilities, pupils develop their skills through lessons, fixtures and competitions while building teamwork, resilience and confidence. Opportunities range from recreational participation to competitive sport, and the Prep School is home to the Junior Langley Football Academy for talented players to hone their skills.

At Langley, success in sport is not measured only by the final score. It can be found in joining a team for the first time, mastering a new skill, supporting others or discovering an activity that becomes a lifelong interest.

As pupils progress through the Prep School, they are encouraged to broaden their horizons through enriching programmes such as the Junior Duke Awards and Young Entrepreneurs Academy. Through the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, pupils engage in hands-on workshops and real-world projects, learning how to develop ideas, build business plans, and understand marketing and finance, all while developing their creativity, problem-solving, leadership and emotional intelligence – all essential skills that prepare young people for an ever-changing economy.

Alongside this, the Junior Duke Awards provide a structured series of challenges that promote independence, confidence and practical life skills, from first aid to community service, helping pupils develop a strong sense of responsibility and leadership.

Together, these opportunities empower pupils to step beyond the classroom, nurturing adaptable, confident young people who are well prepared for future academic success and life beyond Langley.

At Langley Prep School, personal development and wellbeing are central to everyday school life. Our bespoke Wensum Award, inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, is a structured personal development programme that builds resilience, independence, cultural awareness and essential life skills through practical challenges and experiences.

We provide a number of wellbeing touchpoints, with Class Teachers (Years 3–4) and Form Tutors (Years 5–8) serving as the first point of contact. These include mindfulness initiatives, a mentoring programme pairing older and younger pupils, dedicated pastoral spaces, and Honey, our friendly wellbeing dog.

Together, these initiatives create a supportive and nurturing environment where every child can flourish, making prep school life at Langley both enriching and rewarding.
